Nichols and McChesney are right and wrong at the same time. Yes, the long slow decline of hard-hitting journalism has done sad and strange things to our democracy; but a new kind of journalism, harder to recognize, is springing up as a result of the emergence of new media technologies like really good cellphone camera, twitter accounts, and blogging. Whereas before journalism relied on strategically placed news bureaus, now there's potentially a journalist literally everywhere there are people. I recently wrote about this on my own blog at http://jennamcwilliams.blogspot.com/2009/04/future-of-journalism-we-report-we.html. I'd love for you to take a look!
