It displays a location near you, quasi-randomly computed based on the value of the New York Stock Exchange on a particular date (that’s what the date sliders are for). This is the “secret” mechanism by which readers of the webcomic XKCD all over the world can meet up with each other face-to-face without any prior communication. There are various other implementations of the same algorithm – it doesn’t have to involve an iPhone.
