[Editor’s note: Props to Bonnie and Laura for this The Washington Post graphic illustrating how the TSA plans to use full-body scans to improve security at airports. Includes actual millimeter wave scans of a man. Related story.]

Security experts say high-tech imagers that detect objects beneath our clothes are vital to safe air travel. Opponents say they are intrusive and too revealing. For now, the process is an optional alternative to a traditional pat-down at airports across the country, including Reagan National and BWI. These are the two types of full-body imaging technology in use or on the way:

Directional Signage and Maps in San Francisco

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Here are several pictures taken at the new California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and at SFO airport last week. The museum’s exhibits and aquarium make extensive use of maps and directional signage. They even feature an lenticular foil showing before and after glacier loss. The California Beef Council map was seen at the Fry’s parking lot in San Jose. The bathroom signage is from the SFO airport where they have both an in and an out for the restrooms 🙂

sfairport

[Editor’s note: I happened on this interactive map from the San Francisco airport when I flew thru SFO this past weekend as I bid adieu to my California vacation. There is an airport overview and maps of each terminal. Gates, stores, food options, restrooms, and other features are located. Each feature is interactive with a tooltip and small description, including open hours for businesses, and full description in the bottom left corner. Category searches are available in the top left corner and the map will highlight with the appropriate location(s).]

Weather Undgerground Gets in the Google Mashup Mood

Monday, March 10th, 2008

weather undgerground logoMy friend Curt has been encouraging me to create a mashup with radar, temperature, and other weather related features for the last few months. Come to find out Weather Underground now has these features on a Google Maps mashup! You can see Washington, DC in the screenshot below. Looks like airports get the “sunny” status icons where most other weather stations track temperature, some wind direction. There is a sidebar (not shown here) that lists all the stations alphabetically. When station names are mouseOver’d there the station will highlight on the map. When a storm passes thru, the map updates with the latest radar. Thanks Curt!

Find your local weather on the mashup…
