LoudounExtra.com Restaurant Search – Goolge Maps Mashup

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

loudoun extra logoA colleague of mine over at WPNI, the online sister company to The Washington Post newspaper, just published a Google Maps based mashup allowing readers in Loudoun County, Virginia to search local eats by “open now”, cuisine type, location, price range, WiFi, and other features. Loudoun is the fastest growing exurb in America over the last decade, according to the US Census Bureau, and The Post has an entire site devoted to that lucrative demographic.

The first few results are mapped per search query (per the vexing inefficiencies of the Google API). When the user clicks on the pin or the listing in the table an info window pops up with abbreviated details (like a phone number and address) with an additional link to get driving directions and see the full database listing. The information is provided by individual restaurants so there is some inconsistency between categories. But very effective. The map view updates to the search results. I especially like the price slider, “local restaurant”, and “open now” functionality. The map technically goes live Friday, so enjoy this preview. Thanks Jess.
